Taste Ukiyo-e
A taste skill for the formal vocabulary of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
Style Tokens
- Bold, confident outline defining form
- Flat areas of saturated color without gradation
- Asymmetric cropping cutting figures at frame edge
- Dramatic diagonal composition
- Decorative textile patterns rendered precisely
- Atmospheric gradation (bokashi) in sky and water
- Multiple spatial planes without Western perspective
- Nature as dynamic force (waves, wind, rain)
- Human figure as silhouette and gesture
- Negative space as design element
Anti-Tokens
- Chiaroscuro modeling or cast shadows
- Atmospheric perspective with muted distance
- Photographic naturalism
- Centered symmetrical composition
- Muddy or desaturated color
- Loose, sketchy linework
Application Rules
- Outline first, color fills defined areas — line is structure
- Flatten spatial depth into layered planes
- Crop boldly — let the frame cut into subjects
- Use pattern and texture as compositional weight
- Weather and atmosphere are active subjects, not backgrounds
Evaluation Criteria
- Are outlines confident and unbroken?
- Does color sit in flat, decisive areas?
- Is the composition asymmetric and dynamic?
- Do patterns contribute to visual rhythm?
- Is there a sense of the floating world — transient beauty captured?
