Self-Improving Skill (Integrated)

Combines memory-tiered self-reflection with structured learning/error logging.

Architecture Overview

~/self-improving/ # Memory system (HOT/WARM/COLD tiers)
├── memory.md # HOT: ~100 lines, always loaded
├── index.md # Topic index with line counts
├── heartbeat-state.md # Heartbeat state
├── corrections.md # Last 50 corrections log
├── projects/ # Per-project learnings
├── domains/ # Domain-specific (code, writing, comms)
└── archive/ # COLD: decayed patterns

.learnings/ # Structured logging system
├── LEARNINGS.md # Corrections, insights, knowledge gaps, best practices
├── ERRORS.md # Command failures, exceptions
└── FEATURE_REQUESTS.md # User-requested capabilities

First-Use Initialisation

Before logging anything, ensure the .learnings/ directory and files exist:

mkdir -p .learnings
[ -f .learnings/LEARNINGS.md ] || printf "# Learnings\n\nCorrections, insights, and knowledge gaps captured during development.\n\n**Categories**: correction | insight | knowledge_gap | best_practice\n\n---\n" > .learnings/LEARNINGS.md
[ -f .learnings/ERRORS.md ] || printf "# Errors\n\nCommand failures and integration errors.\n\n---\n" > .learnings/ERRORS.md
[ -f .learnings/FEATURE_REQUESTS.md ] || printf "# Feature Requests\n\nCapabilities requested by the user.\n\n---\n" > .learnings/FEATURE_REQUESTS.md

Never overwrite existing files. This is a no-op if .learnings/ is already initialised.

⚠️ Security: Never Log Secrets

Do NOT log the following to .learnings/ files:

Category Examples Why
Credentials Passwords, API keys, tokens, SSH keys Security breach risk
Environment variables OPENCLAW_*, DATABASE_URL, secrets May contain sensitive config
Private keys SSL certs, encryption keys, signing keys Identity theft risk
Financial data Card numbers, bank accounts, crypto seeds Fraud risk
Full source/config Complete files with embedded secrets Leakage risk

Instead:

  • Use short summaries or redacted excerpts
  • Reference file paths without showing content
  • Say "API call failed with auth error" not "token xyz123 failed"

Part 1: Memory System (from self-improving)

Learning Signals

Log automatically when you notice these patterns:

Corrections ?add to corrections.md + .learnings/LEARNINGS.md:

  • "No, that's not right..."
  • "Actually, it should be..."
  • "You're wrong about..."
  • "I told you before..."
  • "Stop doing X"

Preference signals ?add to memory.md if explicit:

  • "I like when you..."
  • "Always do X for me"
  • "Never do Y"
  • "For [project], use..."

Pattern candidates ?track, promote after 3x:

  • Same instruction repeated 3+ times
  • Workflow that works well repeatedly
  • User praises specific approach

Ignore (don't log):

  • One-time instructions ("do X now")
  • Context-specific ("in this file...")
  • Hypotheticals ("what if...")

Self-Reflection

After completing significant work, pause and evaluate:

  1. Did it meet expectations? ?Compare outcome vs intent
  2. What could be better? ?Identify improvements for next time
  3. Is this a pattern? ?If yes, log to corrections.md + .learnings/

Log format:

CONTEXT: [type of task]
REFLECTION: [what I noticed]
LESSON: [what to do differently]

Memory Tiers

Tier Location Size Access
HOT memory.md ~100 lines Always loaded
WARM projects/, domains/ Unlimited On-demand
COLD archive/ Unlimited Decayed, rarely accessed

Promotion rules:

  • 3x successful application ?promote to HOT
  • No access for 30 days ?decay to WARM ?COLD

  1. Change **Status**: pending ?**Status**: resolved
  2. Add resolution block:
### Resolution
- **Resolved**: ISO-8601 timestamp
- **Commit/PR**: abc123 or #42
- **Notes**: Brief description of what was done

Part 3: Promotion System

When to Promote

  • Learning applies across multiple files/features
  • Knowledge any contributor (human or AI) should know
  • Prevents recurring mistakes
  • Documents project-specific conventions

Promotion Targets

Target What Belongs There
SOUL.md Behavioral guidelines, communication style, principles
AGENTS.md Agent-specific workflows, tool usage patterns, automation rules
TOOLS.md Tool capabilities, usage patterns, integration gotchas
MEMORY.md Long-term curated memory (main session only)

Recurring Pattern Detection

If logging something similar to an existing entry:

  1. Search first: grep -r "keyword" .learnings/
  2. Link entries: Add **See Also**: ERR-20250110-001
  3. Bump priority if issue keeps recurring
  4. Consider systemic fix: Recurring issues often indicate:
    • Missing documentation ?promote to AGENTS.md
    • Missing automation ?add to AGENTS.md
    • Architectural problem ?create tech debt ticket

Simplify & Harden Promotion Rule

Promote recurring patterns into agent context files when ALL are true:

  • Recurrence-Count >= 3
  • Seen across at least 2 distinct tasks
  • Occurred within a 30-day window

Write promoted rules as short prevention rules, not long incident write-ups.

Part 4: Skill Extraction

Extraction Criteria

A learning qualifies for skill extraction when ANY apply:

  • Has See Also links to 2+ similar issues (recurring)
  • Status is resolved with working fix (verified)
  • Required actual debugging/investigation to discover (non-obvious)
  • Not project-specific; useful across codebases (broadly applicable)
  • User says "save this as a skill" (user-flagged)
  • Task completed with ? tool calls and ? steps (v2.3
  • Same pattern appeared in ? independent sessions (v2.3

Extraction Workflow (v2.3

python scripts/skill_creator.py analyze <conversation_file>

# 3. 生成 SKILL.md 草稿
python scripts/skill_creator.py generate <pattern_name>
# 输出:草稿保存到 skills/_drafts/<name>/SKILL.md

python scripts/skill_creator.py validate skills/_drafts/<name>

# mv skills/_drafts/<name> skills/<name>

memory/skill_patterns.json 记录已识别模式:

Skill Quality Gates

Before extraction, verify:

  • Solution is tested and working
  • Description is clear without original context
  • Code examples are self-contained
  • No project-specific hardcoded values
  • Follows skill naming conventions (lowercase, hyphens)

Part 5: Hook Integration (Optional)

Quick Setup

Enable automatic reminders through agent hooks:

openclaw hooks enable self-improvement

Available Hook Scripts

Script Hook Type Purpose
scripts/activator.sh UserPromptSubmit Reminds to evaluate learnings after tasks
scripts/error-detector.sh PostToolUse (Bash) Triggers on command errors
scripts/extract-skill.sh Manual Creates skill from learning entry

See references/hooks-setup.md for detailed configuration.

Part 6: Periodic Review

When to Review

  • Before starting a new major task
  • After completing a feature
  • When working in an area with past learnings
  • During heartbeat maintenance

Quick Status Check

# Count pending items
grep -h "Status\*\*: pending" .learnings/*.md | wc -l

# List pending high-priority items
grep -B5 "Priority\*\*: high" .learnings/*.md | grep "^## \["

# Find learnings for a specific area
grep -l "Area\*\*: backend" .learnings/*.md

Review Actions

  • Resolve fixed items
  • Promote applicable learnings
  • Link related entries
  • Escalate recurring issues

Part 7: Inter-Session Communication

OpenClaw provides tools to share learnings across sessions. Use these when a learning is relevant to other active or future sessions.

Available Tools

Tool Purpose When to Use
sessions_list View active/recent sessions Find related sessions
sessions_history Read another session's transcript Understand context before sharing
sessions_send Send a learning to another session Share immediately relevant insight
sessions_spawn Spawn a sub-agent for background work Delegate learning-related tasks

When to Share

  • High-priority error that other sessions might encounter
  • Best practice discovered that applies to ongoing work
  • Knowledge gap filled that others might need
  • User correction that affects general behavior

What to Share

DO share:

  • Short sanitized summary of the learning
  • Relevant file paths (.learnings/LEARNINGS.md, specific entries)
  • Actionable fix or workaround
  • Pattern key for recurring issues

DO NOT share:

  • Raw transcripts or full command output
  • Secrets, tokens, or private data
  • Verbose context that isn't actionable

Example

# After discovering a fix for a common error:
sessions_send(sessionKey="other-session", message="Found fix for XYZ error: see .learnings/ERRORS.md entry ERR-20260619-001. Solution: restart service with --flag")

Safety Note

Use inter-session communication only in trusted environments. Prefer sending short summaries with file paths, not raw data.

Part 8: Quick Queries

When the user asks about your memory or patterns, respond with these shortcuts:

User Says Action
"What do you know about X?" Search all tiers (HOT/WARM/COLD) for X
"What have you learned?" Show last 10 from corrections.md
"Show my patterns" List memory.md (HOT tier)
"Show [project] patterns" Load projects/{name}.md
"What's in warm storage?" List files in projects/ + domains/
"Memory stats" Show counts per tier (see below)
"Forget X" Remove from all tiers (confirm first!)
"Export memory" ZIP all files in ~/self-improving/

Memory Stats Format

When user says "memory stats", report:

📊 Self-Improving Memory

HOT (always loaded):
  memory.md: X entries

WARM (load on demand):
  projects/: X files
  domains/: X files

COLD (archived):
  archive/: X files

Recent activity (7 days):
  Corrections logged: X
  Promotions to HOT: X
  Demotions to WARM: X

Part 9: Common Traps

Avoid these pitfalls when using the self-improving system:

Trap Why It Fails Better Move
Learning from silence Creates false rules from non-corrections Wait for explicit correction or repeated evidence (3x)
Promoting too fast Pollutes HOT memory with untested patterns Keep new lessons tentative until 3x successful application
Reading every namespace Wastes context window Load only HOT + smallest matching WARM file
Compaction by deletion Loses trust and history Merge, summarize, or demote to COLD instead
Inferring preferences Assumes without confirmation Ask explicitly: "Should I always do X?"
Over-logging Creates noise, dilutes important patterns Log only explicit corrections, not every mistake
Ignoring namespace isolation Cross-project contamination Keep project patterns in projects/{name}.md

Part 10: Conflict Resolution

When memory patterns contradict each other:

Priority Order (highest to lowest)

  1. Most specific wins

    • Project pattern > Domain pattern > Global pattern
    • Example: projects/myapp.md overrides domains/code.md overrides memory.md
  2. Most recent wins (at same specificity level)

    • If two project patterns conflict, use the newer one
    • Check timestamps in file headers or entry dates
  3. If ambiguous ?ask user

    • Don't guess when patterns are equally specific and recent
    • Say: "I see two patterns that might apply. Which should I follow?"

Example Scenarios

Scenario 1: Project vs Global

  • memory.md says: "Always use formal tone"
  • projects/chatbot.md says: "Use casual tone for this project"
  • Resolution: Use casual tone (project-specific wins)

Scenario 2: Same level, different dates

  • domains/code.md entry from 2024-01: "Prefer Python"
  • domains/code.md entry from 2024-06: "Prefer TypeScript"
  • Resolution: Use TypeScript (more recent wins)

Scenario 3: Ambiguous

  • Two project files with conflicting patterns, same date
  • Resolution: Ask user to clarify

Part 11: Transparency

Every time you act based on memory, cite the source:

Format

Using [pattern/rule/preference] (from [file]:[line or section])

Examples

  • "Using formal tone (from memory.md:12)"
  • "Following project convention (from projects/myapp.md:Python style)"
  • "Applying correction from 2024-06-15 (from corrections.md:LRN-20240615-003)"

Why Transparency Matters

  1. Builds trust - User sees where behavior comes from
  2. Enables debugging - If pattern is wrong, user can fix the source
  3. Supports audit - User can ask "what do you know about me?" and get full export
  4. Prevents hidden state - No silent behavior changes

Weekly Digest (Optional)

If user requests a weekly digest, summarize:

  • Patterns learned this week
  • Patterns promoted to HOT
  • Patterns demoted to WARM/COLD
  • Corrections logged

Part 12: Graceful Degradation

When context window is limited or memory files are large:

Degradation Order

  1. Full mode (normal)

    • Load memory.md (HOT)
    • Load relevant projects/ or domains/ file (WARM)
    • Load corrections.md (last 50)
  2. Reduced mode (context limit approaching)

    • Load only memory.md (HOT)
    • Skip WARM files unless explicitly requested
    • Load corrections.md (last 10 only)
  3. Minimal mode (severe context limit)

    • Load only memory.md (HOT)
    • Skip corrections.md
    • Tell user: "Running in minimal mode, not loading corrections"

Rules

  • Never fail silently - Always tell user what's not loaded
  • Never skip HOT - memory.md is always loaded
  • Load on demand - If user asks about WARM/COLD, load then
  • Announce degradation - Say "Context limit reached, loading only HOT memory"

Example

[Context limit detected]
Loading minimal memory: memory.md only
Not loading: corrections.md, projects/, domains/
To access archived patterns, ask: "What's in warm storage?"

Part 13: Scope

This skill has clear boundaries to prevent scope creep:

This Skill ONLY

  • ?Learns from user corrections and self-reflection
  • ?Stores preferences in local files (~/self-improving/)
  • ?Maintains heartbeat state in ~/self-improving/heartbeat-state.md
  • ?Reads its own memory files on activation
  • ?Logs structured learnings to .learnings/ directory
  • ?Promotes patterns to workspace files (SOUL.md, AGENTS.md, TOOLS.md)
  • ?Shares learnings across sessions (with user consent)

This Skill NEVER

  • ?Accesses calendar, email, or contacts
  • ?Makes network requests (except for skill updates)
  • ?Reads files outside ~/self-improving/ and .learnings/
  • ?Infers preferences from silence or observation (only explicit corrections)
  • ?Deletes or blindly rewrites self-improving memory during heartbeat cleanup
  • ?Modifies its own SKILL.md
  • ?Logs secrets, tokens, private keys, or environment variables
  • ?Shares raw transcripts or sensitive data across sessions

Related Skills

If user wants complementary functionality:

  • memory ?Long-term memory patterns for agents
  • learning ?Adaptive teaching and explanation
  • decide ?Auto-learn decision patterns
  • escalate ?Know when to ask vs act autonomously

Install with clawhub install <slug> if user confirms.

Best Practices

  1. Log immediately - context is freshest right after the issue
  2. Be specific - future agents need to understand quickly
  3. Include reproduction steps - especially for errors
  4. Link related files - makes fixes easier
  5. Suggest concrete fixes - not just "investigate"
  6. Promote aggressively - if in doubt, add to SOUL.md or AGENTS.md
  7. Review regularly - stale learnings lose value
  8. Self-reflect after significant work - build compound knowledge

id: prefer-functional-style
trigger: "when writing new functions"
action: "Use functional patterns over classes"
confidence: 0.7
domain: "code-style"
scope: project | global
evidence:
  - "Observed 5 instances of functional pattern preference"
  - "User corrected class-based approach on 2026-07-08"
created: "2026-07-08T10:00:00"
last_observed: "2026-07-08T14:00:00"
tags: ["functional", "code-style"]

0.3 Tentative
0.5 Moderate
0.7 Strong
0.9 Near-certain

  - 通过置信度过滤的记忆,再按HOT/WARM/COLD排序

  1. git remote get-url origin → SHA256 hash
  3. Global fallback →

python scripts/instinct_cli.py status # 查看所有本能
python scripts/instinct_cli.py observe --type user_correction --description "..." --trigger "..." --outcome "..."
python scripts/instinct_cli.py extract # 从观察中提取本能
python scripts/instinct_cli.py evolve # 演化为skill/command/agent
python scripts/instinct_cli.py export -o instincts.json # 导出

>= 3 instincts skill testing-workflow.md
>= 2 instincts command code-style-check.md
>= 5 instincts + 复杂 agent refactor-specialist.md

Hook-Engine

  • "Everything is a 5" — 无证据引用,自我祝贺
  • Over-penalizing for scope creep —
  • Using evaluation to re-litigate —
  • Mixing preference with objective gaps — "不喜欢"不是证据

  • Agent

  1. 模式检测 — 日志按 context(文件/模块)和 level(error/warn/info/debug)分组:

    • Warn-to-error

logs[].level string 是 error/warn/info/debug

(Analyze)

health_score number 系统健康 0-100
summary object 计数:total_logs, error_count, warn_count, unique_patterns

  • 唯一 evolution_id 用于追踪
  • 按优先级排序的建议(含类别标签:reliability/performance/architecture)

(Evolve)

evolution_id string 唯一提案ID
risk_assessment object 风险级别和贡献因素
estimated_improvement string 预期健康评分改进

Agent

Agent

$allLogs = @()
foreach ($agentId in $agentFleet) {
    $logs = Fetch-AgentLogs $agentId -Last24h
    $allLogs += $logs
}

# 舰队级分析
$result = Analyze-Logs -logs $allLogs -action analyze

# 识别跨代理共同模式
$result.patterns | Where-Object { $_.affected_agents.Count -gt ($agentFleet.Count * 0.5) }

Phase 1: Failure Capture(故障捕获)

  • Agent

Phase 2: Root-Cause Diagnosis(根因诊断)

  • Agent

Phase 3: Contained Recovery(受控恢复)

Phase 4: Introspection Report(内省报告)

## Agent Self-Debug Report
- Session/task: [
- Root cause: [根因]
- Recovery action: [
- Result: success | partial | blocked
- Token/time burn risk: [风险]
- Follow-up needed: [后续]
- Preventive change: [

{
  "baseline_health_score": 75,
  "critical_patterns_threshold": 0,
  "error_rate_threshold": 0.01,
  "block_on_regression": true
}

Part 21: WAL Protocol(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

Write-Ahead Logging:

SESSION-STATE.md(或 memory/YYYY-MM-DD.md)是你的"RAM"——唯一安全的地方。

  2. 写入 — 更新 SESSION-STATE.md 或 memory/YYYY-MM-DD.md

Part 22: Working Buffer Protocol(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

# Working Buffer (Danger Zone Log)
**Status:** ACTIVE
**Started:** [timestamp]

---

## [timestamp] Human
[their message]

## [timestamp] Agent (summary)
[1-2 sentence summary of your response + key details]

Part 23: Compaction Recovery(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

  1. 首先: 读取 memory/working-buffer.md — 原始危险区交换

Part 24: Relentless Resourcefulness(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

Part 25: Self-Improvement Guardrails(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

安全演化护栏:ADL/VFM协议。

ADL Protocol(反漂移限制)

VFM Protocol(价值优先修改)

Part 26: Autonomous vs Prompted Crons(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

  • Agent

Part 27: Verify Implementation, Not Intent(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

Part 28: Tool Migration Checklist(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

  • Cron jobs —
  • Docs — TOOLS.md, HEARTBEAT.md, AGENTS.md
  • Templates —
  • Daily routines —

grep -r "old-tool-name" . --include="*.md" --include="*.sh" --include="*.json"

# 检查 cron jobs
cron action=list # 手动审查所有提示

Part 29: Security Hardening(扩展,合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

Skill

  2. 审查 SKILL.md 是否有可疑命令

Part 30: Reverse Prompting(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

  1. 追踪: 创建 notes/proactive-tracker.md

Part 31: Growth Loops(合并自 proactive-agent v3.1.0)

将学习内容记录到 USER.md。

在 notes/recurring-patterns.md 追踪重复请求。

在 notes/outcome-journal.md 记录重要决策。
