Haze Season in Singapore: Peat Smoke Over the Island

Peat-fire haze swallows Singapore's skyline, the Mount Faber cable cars vanish into brown, and noon burns amber for weeks

A slow, multi-week stay in Singapore's west during the late southwest monsoon, when smoke from peat fires across the Strait of Malacca settles over the island. The PSI climbs into the very unhealthy band. Sports courts close and masks appear at void decks. Towers dissolve at Marina Bay and the sun shrinks to a dull orange coin. You live inside the haze day after day, through rain that fails and sealed windows, until an inter-monsoon thunderstorm finally rinses the sky.

Why Now

On 14 Oct 2026 Singapore’s 1-hour PM2.5 hit about 284–288 in the west, the year’s highest and the top ‘very high’ band, while evening 24-hour PSI reached 203 (very unhealthy) in the west and centre. BBC, Reuters and AFP all ran the regional haze the same day; IQAir listed Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Medan as the world’s most polluted cities, Malaysian schools closed, and Timor-Leste suspended classes, with ASMC at Alert Level 3. You are in the west of the island as the cable cars toward Mount Faber vanish into brown smoke and the skyline drops out. PSI sits in the very unhealthy band, sports facilities nearby are shut, and the sun is a dull orange disc that smells of peat.

What Awaits You

Step 1: Smell at First Light

You wake to a smell you don't recognize. Not unpleasant. Not at first. It coats the back of your throat like something ancient burned down to ash and carried across water.

The bedroom window is closed. You opened it last night to feel the city. Now the air outside has thickness. You can see it: a brownish haze pressing against the glass, dense enough that the HDB block across Jurong West Street 41 is just a shape. An outline. A rumour.

You pull on clothes and step into the corridor. The smell thickens here. Peat. Burnt earth. Something that's been smouldering for days somewhere you can't see. Your neighbours' laundry hangs from bamboo poles strung between units. T-shirts. Sarongs. Underwear. A neighbour from 501 is pulling hers in now, moving quickly, as if the haze might soak into the fabric while she's not looking.

You walk downstairs. The void deck is already warm at seven in the morning. An elderly man sits with his coffee, reading the newspaper. The sports court beyond is empty. No badminton nets. No sound of shuttlecocks. Just the drone of a single motorcycle passing on the street, its headlight faint in the brown air.

The sky isn't grey. It's the colour of weak tea. Milky. Suspended. The sun exists somewhere behind it, a dull orange disc you could almost look at directly without squinting. This isn't cloud cover. Clouds move. This is settled. This is staying.

A woman in a blue mask walks past. Then another. A child holds a parent's hand, the small mask rising and falling in an even rhythm. At the minimart on the corner, a handwritten sign is taped to the door: Masks available.

You stand at the void deck's edge. The smell is stronger here. It's in your hair now. Your clothes. Your nostrils. You can taste it faintly beneath your tongue, like you've swallowed a pinch of something that won't dissolve.
