Riding Out a Super Typhoon in Merizo, Southern Guam
A super typhoon scrapes Guam's southern coast. The power dies, the shutters hammer, and Merizo holds its breath until dawn.
One night inside a concrete house in Merizo (Malesso'), Guam's southernmost village, as a super typhoon tracks just offshore. You move from late-afternoon shuttering and filling the bathtub, through extreme wind warnings, a blackout and rain driven sideways through every seam, to a dawn of peeled tin roofs, flooded lanes, shredded palms and a hard blue sky over Cocos Island. It is hot, loud, wet and close, and nothing about it is poetic.
Why Now
Through October 17–18 the New York Times, KUAM, the Pacific Daily News and the National Weather Service tracked Champi exploding to Category 4 and super-typhoon strength, passing about 10 miles south of Malesso' with extreme wind warnings for southern villages and gusts likely over 100 mph. After midnight in a southern village the shutters hammer, the power dies, and rain comes sideways as the outer wall scrapes the coast; by dawn the wind drops as fast as it arrived, leaving peeled metal roofs, flooded lanes, and a hard blue gap where the eye went by.

What Awaits You
Step 1: Shutters Go Up in Merizo
You arrive in Merizo as the light turns thick and amber. The air doesn't move. It presses against your skin like a damp palm, already soaked through with salt from the Philippine Sea just beyond the reef. The village smells like rust and diesel and something green rotting at the margins.
The concrete house you're entering sits squat and pale on a corner lot. Its owner is already at work. The sound hits you first: the metallic shriek of a cordless drill, repetitive and urgent, followed by the heavier percussion of a hammer driving bolts through steel. The storm shutters are halfway up, bolted to the frame of each window. What was glass and light an hour ago is becoming sealed steel.
You step inside. The kitchen is a controlled chaos of preparation. The bathtub is running, filling with water. Plastic jugs crowd the counter. Someone has taped the edges of the door frames with duct tape, though you can already see where the tape will fail. The humidity is so thick your shirt turns into a second skin. Sweat runs into your eye and stings.
Through the half-shuttered window, you see the neighbor's generator sitting on concrete blocks. It coughs. Once. Twice. Then a sustained growl as it fires up, spewing blue-white smoke that hangs in the motionless air. The sound is visceral: a machine proving itself before the real test.
Outside, the boonie dogs are pacing. Three of them, lean and purposeful, moving in tight circles around the property line. They're not barking. Their ears are folded back.
Beyond the houses, past the fringe palms, the sea is wrong. The water beyond the reef is pale and restless. It churns in a way that has nothing to do with normal tide. Foam collects in broken white lines, fizzing and collapsing. The color is the color of something nervous.
Back inside, the drill shrieks again. Another shutter. Another bolt. Flakes of rust drift from the steel track and stick to your wet forearm as the panel slides home.
