Reflect on Professional Identity
Help the person understand where they are professionally, where they want to go and why. This skill is about career identity, not general-purpose journaling or making a resume.
Contract
- Input: profile/ direction, experience and preferences; relevant project accounts or supplied history.
- Scope: Clarify professional motivations, north star and choices; do not rewrite experience or public positioning.
- Output: profile/direction.md (or mapped equivalent): reflection, alternatives, decisions and open questions.
Steps
- Read available professional history, projects, past decisions, goals and personal constraints. Distinguish observations from interpretations; do not assume any profession or preferred promotion path.
- Establish a concise starting picture: current role and demonstrated strengths, preferred work, interests, motivations and uncertainties.
- Explore relevant tensions (for example technical IC versus people management, breadth versus specialization, compensation versus autonomy). Ask questions only when their answers could change the reflection. Where the user already supplied an answer, reuse it.
- Present plausible professional directions with supporting evidence, trade-offs, risks and realistic evidence gaps. Do not turn aspirational skills into existing qualifications.
- Prepare a Professional Reflection Brief. Offer to incorporate confirmed facts or goals into a canonical record when authorized, without overwriting fact records merely to fit a narrative.
Output: Professional Reflection Brief
- Current professional identity (fact-based)
- Demonstrated strengths and supporting examples
- Interests, motivators and work preferences (user-attributed)
- Possible directions and associated trade-offs
- Preferred direction, if decided, or alternatives still under consideration
- Private north star, goals, experiments and evidence to gather
- Development priorities to hand off to a private action plan; plan-development can structure it when available
- Open questions and decisions
When the workspace has a root README.md index, add a link to each new record under Records.
Done when
- Facts, user preferences, aspirations and hypotheses are unambiguously separated.
- No irrelevant personal details or unsupported career claims are introduced.
- Already-answered questions are not repeated.
- An undecided user may leave with several options rather than forced certainty.
- No private reflection is published without explicit approval.
