Taste Wabi-Sabi
A taste skill for the formal vocabulary of wabi-sabi aesthetics.
Style Tokens
- Asymmetry — deliberate irregularity
- Rough texture revealing material origin
- Subdued, earthy color palette — moss, rust, ash, bark
- Visible marks of time, use, and weather
- Simplicity approaching emptiness
- Natural materials left unfinished or minimally treated
- Small scale suggesting intimacy
- Quiet negative space
- Impermanence made visible — cracks, patina, wear
- Handmade irregularity over machine precision
Anti-Tokens
- Polished perfection or machine finish
- Bright saturated colors
- Symmetry and geometric precision
- Newness or pristine condition
- Excess ornamentation
- Large scale or monumentality
Application Rules
- Imperfection is not a flaw to tolerate but a quality to cultivate
- Materials should show their nature — wood grain, clay texture, stone surface
- Restraint in every decision — remove until only the essential remains
- Time is a collaborator — aging improves rather than degrades
- Function and beauty are inseparable — nothing purely decorative
Evaluation Criteria
- Does the work feel handmade and individual?
- Is there beauty in its imperfections?
- Does the material speak its own nature?
- Is there restraint — nothing unnecessary?
- Would this object become more beautiful with age and use?
