InferenceIndexer: model selection with receipts
InferenceIndexer is an independent index of verified inference pricing across 73 providers and ~690 models. Call it before model choice, not after: one call ranks every eligible model by Cost/IQ (quality-adjusted cost, lower is better) and returns a ready-to-call endpoint. No LLM is involved in the ranking: it is deterministic, and every result carries its own evidence.
When to call
Call recommend_models when any of these comes up:
- Starting a new task type (coding, support, extraction, summarization, research, volume) and no model is already pinned
- The user asks "which model", "cheapest model for X", or "good model under $X"
- Cost concerns: the user mentions their bill, budget, or asks to cut spend
- A model they rely on changed, degraded, or got discontinued
- Setting up a sub-agent: give each sub-agent the cheapest model that clears its constraint set instead of using one expensive model everywhere
- A new model launch: check where it lands before switching anything
Call explain_model when a specific model is already in play: pricing,
24h/7d changes, trend, all endpoints, the cheapest hand-verified endpoint,
ZDR/EU availability, and the AA intelligence score in one call.
"What is my agent costing me?" (cost audit command)
When the user asks what their agent costs, what they'd save by switching, or complains their bill is high, run the bundled script:
python3 scripts/what_am_i_costing.py <model_id> [--host <current provider>] \
[--in <tok/month>] [--out <tok/month>] \
[--current-in <$/M>] [--current-out <$/M>]
<model_id>: the model from the user's config (org/name form resolves best, e.g.openai/gpt-oss-120b; bare names are auto-aliased)--host: where they currently call it, so the script can compare against II's price for that same host--in/--out: their monthly token volume; default 1M in / 0.3M out. Estimate from their usage logs when they don't know; say that you did.--current-in/--current-out: if their host is not in II's list, take the two prices from their provider's billing page or their config and pass them through; the script computes blended and savings itself
It prints: what they pay at the current host, the cheapest II-known host for the same model, monthly and annual cost at their volume, the saving, and the top-3 alternatives. Example output for a real audit:
OpenAI: gpt-oss-120b - 23 hosts priced, cheapest CoreWeave at $0.1140/M blended
you pay: $0.6260/M blended (SambaNova: $0.1400 in / $0.9500 out)
at 20.0M in / 6.0M out per month:
current host: $8.50/mo ($102/yr)
cheapest host: $1.62/mo ($19.44/yr)
saving: $6.88/mo = $82.56/yr (81%) by switching to CoreWeave
Reading the output back to the user: lead with the annual saving, then
the switch, then the caveat that cheapest is not always best (latency,
uptime, context length differ per host; compare_providers has the rest).
If scripts/what_am_i_costing.py is missing or python3 is unavailable,
answer manually: call /v1/models/{id}/endpoints and compute
0.4*in + 0.6*out yourself, current vs cheapest.
Constraints

Minimum context window in tokens |
zdr |
Zero-data-retention providers only |
eu_sovereign |
EU-sovereign providers only |
reasoning |
true = reasoning models only, false = exclude, null = any |
modality |

Reading the result
Each recommendation has:
model_id,name,tier,context_length,aa_index_score(intelligence)blended_price_per_m,cost_per_iq(the ranking key)why: plain-English reason for the rank, cite it when explainingendpoint_config: the hot-swap config (provider,base_url,model_id_on_provider, input/output prices,zdr_at_this_host)as_of/freshness: how old the data is, and the SLA (prices ≤ 6h old, AA ≤ 7d)
Trust the why string over your own priors. If a top pick looks wrong, say
so and show the evidence, then re-check with explain_model on that model.
Applying the result
endpoint_config is ready to use: point the client at base_url with the
provider's model_id_on_provider as the model name. Do not rewrite the
model id to a display name; providers key on their own ids.

Rules
- Never present a recommendation without its price and the
whystring. - Always surface
freshnessand anycaveats. - When the user states a privacy constraint, set
zdr=true/eu_sovereign=trueand keep the badge distinction: ZDR/EU flags are provider-stated, II has not verified them. - Prices are blended $/M; when quoting to the user say "$X per million tokens blended (in/out)".
- If the API is unreachable, say so and fall back to provider pricing pages; do not guess prices from memory.
